O'sonho

Osonho 2
O’sonho means “dream” in Portuguese, an apt name because it was the owners; Nik and Cris Barancik,  dream to open up a Portuguese restaurant after getting  a taste of it during their travels  I’m been meaning to try this place for so long was glad to have gotten an invite to taste the offering of this restaurant last week.

I got a Strawberry Banana smoothie while Irene tried their Margarita to start. I liked mine, it was very refreshing, while Irene was not impressed with the margarita, she like the ones from Chili’s better.

We started the meal with Chourico sisig, a twist on the Filipino classic with added chorizo and pork rind. I’m not really a fan of sisig but I liked this dish because of the chorizo. Picado, their version of salpicado, came next. I liked this dish but found it to be on the expensive side at around P300 for a moderate amount of beef. Rounding out the appetizers was Cerveza battered fish and chips; this dish did not taste anything special for me, just ordinary fish and chips.

The main courses started with my favorite dish of the night, the Coffee marinated roast pork. The first dish served to us had burned skin that resulted in the not so nice picture. Removing the burnt portion, I tasted the wonderful flavor of the coffee marinade in the soft pork; add more of the coffee sauce drizzled on the side for extra kick. I’d like to mention the wonderful siding, the mashed squash-potato, a blending of two of my favorites.

Paellas were served next in two variations, all meat and seafood. I was surprised to find a curry like taste in paella different from the usual Spanish paella, which I later found out was cumin. Asking Nik about this, he said this is the Portuguese way, similar to the Spanish yet different in their own way.

Peri-peri chicken, a roasted whole chicken dish spiced with peri-peri spice that is synonymous with Portuguese cooking came out next. I like this dish because I expected it to be spicy but only found the meat to be seeped in flavor but not overly hot. They provide more peri-peri sauce on the side for those who want it spicier. Nik said that the reason they lessened the spice is a compromise between his wife and him. She is not a fan of spicy food, while he is.  You can also order this with rice or pasta, just be sure to mention the level of spiciness to the waiter. The pasta served to us was too spicy for me to handle.

For dessert, we were served Almond Sansrival, Tres Leches (3 milk) and a chocolate cake. I like the tres leches, smooth taste and not too sweet but did not taste the chocolate cake since I don’t like chocolate. The sansrival was nothing special.

We are definitely going to be coming back here and if ever you guys are in the area give them a try and taste the dream. The also have another branch located at 20 Jupiter St., Makati.
