Yamato: Drums of Japan

I got to witness a stunning performance by Yamato taiko group in Mall of Asia. Taiko means Japanese traditional drum, whcih are made from animal skin and trees some of which are almost 400 years old. At present there are more than 8,000 taiko groups in Japan alone, of which Yamato is one of the best. They were founded in Nara prefecture  in 1983. Since then they have performed more than 2,000 shows in 45 different countries.

This is my second time to witness a taiko performance, the first was in Singapore's Clarke Quay which was performed by an amateur group and even includes kids.

Yamato's performance was magnificent, all movements were coordinated perfectly. Each beat of the drums from the smallest to the biggest was felt by the whole audience. They even had audience participating in some of the sets with clapping and shouting. Just watching them perform you will see that they are at peak form and have trained their technique as well as their physique to be able to do this.

Just try mimicking their movements, you'll be tired even without hitting anything let alone do it in time with the beat. Irene even told me that maybe they should do an aerobic exercise in gym incorporating taiko, since its a full bodied workout.

I encourage you guys to try to make it to their last performance tomorrow at SM North Edsa's Sky Dome at 7:30pm. Don't be late since they start on time. Best of all its free.
