"Shiok" is a term that means great satisfaction in Singapore and Malaysia, in Fookien it means cheap.
This restaurant manages to capture both meanings. Food tastes good and is quite affordable. The place served mostly Singaporean and Malaysian dishes with a few Hong Kong favorites thrown in.
We've been meaning to go try this place out after some nice things from Carlos. Last Sunday was a perfect opportunity to try the place out after our aborted BBQ Chicken foray.
We got to the place around 1pm. Parking outside was very easy though it was not free. We were quickly led to a table and proceeded to peruse the menu. Irene quickly settled on Roti Pratta and Hainanese Chicken Rice. I, on the other hand, was torn since there was a lot of things I wanted to try. I finally decided on Nasi Lemak, I've never tried it before but was curious to try it.

Irene liked her Hainanese Chicken Rice set, although it's quite funny that the accompanying soup is "Sibut"(chinese chicken herb soup). I had a little taste of the chicken and it was flavorful and tender. The rice was also seeped in chicken flavor.

My Nasi Lemak came last. This is the first time I've ordered this and honestly did not know what to expect. Nasi Lemak literally means "rice in cream" in Malay. At its core, Nasi Lemak consists of the coconunt cream rice, fried egg, sambal sauce, roasted peanuts, cucumber and fried anchovies. Shiok's version came with fried chicken.
I'm not a super spicy food eater so I sparingly added the sambal sauce to the dish. I just mixed up all the ingredients with the rice and ate them by the spoonfuls adding a little sambal sauce here and there to heighten the flavor.
We really enjoyed our meal and found the place to be "Shiok". We'll definitely be back to try the other things as well as bring our daughter here.

ReplyDeleteI just had a taste of the famous Nasi Lemak when we visited Genting in Malaysia. The huge serving of sambal was already poured over the chicken when served so i had no choice but to eat the sambal first, not realizing that it was too spicy! I had no idea what a sambal is at that time. Well at least I got to taste one. More power to your blog :)
