When I got an invite to sample Chuck's Deli, I honestly had no idea what to expect with the only info being they only serve sandwiches. When we go to Serendra, I was struck by the predominantly red motif of the place and felt at ease immediately. We got to browse their menu and I immediately saw a few things I wanted to try.
That night we were served an assortment of subwiches and slabwiches. Slabwiches uses crunchy ciabatta while subwiches use hoagie buns, all of which are baked by Chuck's Deli themselves. The bread is half baked and only finished upon receiving a sandwich order so you can be sure to taste freshly baked bread with each order.
Reuben Slabwich (P275 - half slab/ P495 - full). My favorite sandwich of the night. What do get if you add homemade bread to homemade sauerkraut and Angus corned beef brisket? You get an almost perfect Chuck's Deli rendition of the Reuben, a mythical sandwich I've heard about in countless movies and tv shows especially those set in New York. This one is a little different since the typical Reuben uses rye bread, here it is substituted for ciabatta, this change in bread does not detract from the overall taste as evidenced by how quickly I devoured my share.
The Pilgrim Slabwich (P255 - half slab/ P445 full). This is like having Thanksgiving in a sandwich. Turkey meat with stuffing, cranberry and gravy.I've always anticipated eating out on Thanksgiving, although its a US tradition, some restaurants offer roast turkey with stuffing, this sandwich is as good as it gets.
The Shepherd Subwich (P355) Home made lamb sausage is the star of this creation. It's ampped up by spicy garlic sauce that they call Chuck's sauce, with tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber to balance it out and add different textures to each bite.
The Buffy (P255 - 1/2 slab/ P445 - full). Spicy buffalo chicken and coleslaw. I only had a little bite of this and it was quite spicy, not a match for my tender taste buds. They also have a Chuck's challenge wherein a customer will try to eat one full slab of The Buffy in 5 minutes, doing so will entitle to a t shirt and the sandwich will be free. So far, there is only 1 person who has finished the challenge. Finishing a full slabwich in 5 minutes is already hard let alone a very spicy one.
Chuck's Burger (P265, add cheese-P45, add bacon - P45). By this time, I'm already quite full so I just a small slice of the burger, its quite a large burger, I reckon the patty is probably a 1/2 pounder.
Home made Potato Chips. Each sandwich order is served with their own real potato chips, no processed potato in sight. The chips are crunchy although it lacked a little seasoning of salt.
California Waki (P255 -1/2 slab/P445 - full). I did not get to taste this crabstick, mango and egg sandwich but Irene said it was very yummy.
Less than a week later, Irene and I were back at Chuck's Deli for lunch. This time we resolved to order slabwiches we were not able to taste the other week.
Hamsome Threesome (P255 - 1/2 slab). Beer ham, Canadian ham, and Black forest ham piled up on each other and topped with Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber. With each bite, you can taste the different flavors of the ham mixing in well with a little Chuck's sauce. Irene was very happy with her order but was not able to finish it all and dumped the last few bites on my wooden plate.
Roast Beef (P255- 1/2 slab). Generous slices of roast beef and Chuck's sauce and lettuce comprised this no frills slabwich. It was very good but while I was happily biting into my slabwich, I couldn't help comparing it to the Reuben. They are similar but different, the roast beef tasted more beefy since the Reuben has sauerkraut. This time the potato chips were perfectly seasoned although served a bit later than the slabwich.
No need to speculate whether we would be go back to Chuck's Deli, since we already did. The problem is how to avoid the lure of ordering the Reuben.
While we were there, we saw a couple of cars waiting out front, it seems these are regular customers who call in their orders and their do a sort of drive thru in front of Chuck's Deli.
*Watch out for their Eastwood Mall branch which will be open towards the end of March.
