Boulevard Diner in Xavierville, near Ateneo, is a small place, able to sit around 30 people but don't let the small frontage dissuade you from entering. They served some of the best and most creative burgers in the metro.
The Food Club was invited one Sunday afternoon to try out the new things on the menu, creations from the mind of our friend, Alvin.
I had previously tried the burger above when I visited months ago with Carlos.I love pineapple slices with my burger and lamented the fact that Jolibee phased out the Aloha burger. The burger was called Larry Lanai (P175). It had a 1/3 pound pure beef patty, which was firm and juicy and held together well. I had finally found a replacement that far surpassed my original favorite. This one had onions and bacon in addition to the pineapples and the usual cheese, lettuce and tomatoes.
This time around, I scanned the menu for something new to try. I was intrigued when I saw the description for Volcanic Viktor (P170), which had bacon, onion rings and chiptole mayo. When it was laid in front of me, all I think of was, how will I eat this. The toppings were piled high with the onion rings taking the top spot like a crown on a king. I proceed to press down on the bun in order to flatten it enough to fit into my mouth. Soft bun gave in to crispy onion rings then the smoky bacon and finally the juicy burger.
Since Irene does not eat meat, she choose a chicken burger called Crazy Cajun (P160). This one also had 1/3 pounds of boneless chicken thighs marinated in Cajun spices. The flavor of the chicken might be a tad too strong to eat by itself but with the added cheese, bread and crunchy coleslaw, the blend was perfect. I ate almost half of this because Irene could not finish it, and we both agree that this is the best chicken sandwich we have ever had.
Aside from their burgers, Boulevard Diner is proud of its spicy buffalo wings called Wingerangs. They come in different levels of spiciness from no spice at all Hickory to the oh so scary Hotter than Hell. I choose the relatively tame on the meter called Lust (P130/ 1/2 pound) and described as chili-lime, a step above Hickory thinking I could take the spiciness. It seems my taste buds lost the battle of the wings as I was able to eat 2 pieces only before giving up. For the people whole love their wings spicy, you'll really love it here, I think I'll stick to hickory next time.
Aside from the usual french fries, Boulevard serves cheese stuffed potato tots called Cheddar Charles (P170/1/2 pound), which were a hit with everyone.
Some of the other things people ordered.
Gorgon-Zola Burger (P180). Their best-seller, oyster mushroom and gorgonzola dressing topped burger.
Sha-Zam!!!! (P195). An interesting burger with crispy potato strings and a fried egg.
B.E.F (P220). Bechamel sauced drenched burger patty on top of french fries and served with a cheese omelette on the side. This one was real interesting
If you fancy less complicated burgers, you can opt to customize your own from their many different toppings.
Boulevard Diner not only serves some of the best burgers in town but also the best chicken burger we've ever had. You can be sure we'll be back.
