Raw Food Workshops by Asha Perri at Sugarleaf

Asha Peri 01

I got a chance to experience something quite different at Sugarleaf,  raw food, more specifically a full meal composed of nothing but raw vegan food. When I was first invited, I was a bit hesitant, thinking that the food would be unappetizing and seems like food for animals but I summoned my bravery and went.

The meal was going to be prepared by Asha Perri, a Bali certified raw vegan chef who trained under renowned raw food educator, Elaine Love of Pure Joy Planet. Asha will be doing a number of workshops, the first of which is titled "Desserts Gone Raw",  tackling all forms of desserts prepared raw that is also suitable for everyone, diabetics included. The workshop will be held on August 6, 1-5pm at Sugarleaf, The Healthcube Bldg., Wilson St.

Mushroom soup was the first dish presented, looks normal, so we started dipping our spoons and proceeded to taste the soup. The other people loved it including Chef Reggie Aspiras, while I was on the fence, not really my type of mushroom soup but I had to admit that for something uncooked it was quite surprisingly good.

Pseudo "Sisig" made from mushrooms with a turnip base providing a little crunch. This was my favorite dish of the day, I'm not a sisig lover but the dish really mimics the taste of the real thing. I'd pick this pseudo sisig over the real thing anyday, it just tasted cleaner probably because of the fresh and raw ingredients used.

Another winner is the Pechay wrap. Who who have thought the lowly pechay would play a starring role like this. The leaf give a wonderful crunch with a multitude of textures from the wrap to the ingredients inside which included the lowly chayote.

Mushroom Quiche. This was not bad for me but not something I would look for.

"Foccacia Bread" . This definitely did not taste like bread, its also very very dense. It was actually super flavorful but the mention of the name produced preconceived notions in us of what the dish should probably taste like.A bit of clever naming would help these few dishes quite well.

Raw chocolates. We divided one piece into around eight parts and each got one, all commented that the grittiness could really be felt as well as the easily getting tired of it (umay).

This post might be a little late for you to get a slot for the dessert workshop but don't fret as Asha Perri will be doing 3 more workshops for the last quarter of 2011.

  2. Average Jane,

Yes, everything is raw and organic, the most they do is dehydrate them.
