I recently got a chance to try curiously named restaurant in Bonifacio High Street called 2nd's. I've heard mixed reviews about the place but still wanted to give it a try. I asked Trixie and Carlos to join Irene and me for lunch there and was quite surprised that the place was actually located on the 2nd floor.
A short elevator ride or if you prefer a flight of stairs and you'll be met by this rather heavy wooden door, even the burly waiter had to strain a little to open.
Upon entering , you'll feel like you've entered someone's den or library with big leather chair and dark wooden furniture all around.
We quickly settled down, eager to order since we were all quite hungry already. Initially, I saw this display on the table but upon more careful inspection saw that they were only available on the weekends. Stupid me should have been clued in reading the heading "Weekend Brunch Specials", must have been the hunger.
After we ordered, the staff laid down a bowl of complimentary sweet potato chips. Who can say no to free food, I know I won't especially when the tummy is growling.
Irene got the Lamb Kaldereta Gratin (P595), a classic Filipino goat stew but this time topped with Swiss cheese. What it lack in the looks department, it wholeheartedly made up in taste. The Swiss cheese topping added a gooey layer to the already hearty stew. Perfect with the white rice served with it, we'll definitely be back for this.
Roast Beef and Raclette(P495). My order, though it tasted good paled in comparison to the lamb kaldereta. I actually like Chuck's Deli's roast beef sandwich much better than this one.
Carlos got the Truffled Three Cheese Mac (P355) for all of us to try. I'm really not a fan of truffles being added to everything, I can't really calculate how much of those are from real truffle, which are very very expensive. The chic Mac and Cheese was ok but nothing spectacular, I'd prefer the gooey Kraft Mac and Cheese any day.
Trixie got the Red Horse Fish and Chips (P395). Unfortunately I was not able to try this but she seemed quite happy with the generous portion.
Carlos ordered Beef Rib Adobo (P495) for himself but after trying it, he could not help asking us to try. I was glad he did, the meat was fork tender, falling off the bone. The garlic flavor had penetrated deep into the meat giving it lots of character.
2nd's is definitely a nice place to have a nice quiet lunch as well as a great place to unwind. Despite my ordering something which was a little underwhelming, there was more than enough great hearty food for me to come back for 2nds.

The Lamb Kaldereta Gratin looks wonderful, it's making me hungry! :)
ReplyDeleteYou should try their bacon chicharon. I simply loved those. Also, I wasn't able to get the name of another dish which they served us, I think they were potato balls? Or something similar. Their lava cake was also something to die for. The vanilla ice cream went really nicely with the warm cake which had melted chocolate in the center.
