Multiply launched as a social networking site in 2003 that allowed people to share pictures and videos with friends and family. Enterprising Filipinos then started using their Multiply accounts as online shopfronts. Multiply initially frowned on the practice but with Facebook dominating the social networking scene, they had to reposition themselves.I remember buying lots of Hello Kitty stuff for my daughter from a seller a couple of years ago.
CEO Peter Peazaris, Go Negosyo founder Joey Concepcion and Philippine Country Manager Jack Madrid led the ribbon cutting formally opening Multiply.com's office in Ortigas. The setting up of the office is evidence of Multiply.com's commitment to the local market.
Multiply CEO and founder Peter Pezaris lead the opening, and said "I am proud to say the Philippines is the largest and fastest growing market for Multiply, with over 2,000 new merchants coming online each month.
Multiply collaborated with and listened to its users as they transformed into a pure e-commerce site. The site boasts of more than 90,000 sellers with over 1 million products available for sale. There is definitely something for everyone.
In addition to the opening, Multiply.com has partnered up with GoNegosyo, to reinforce its commitment to entrepreneurship. The Multiply system allows small and medium sized entrepreneurs to access a market front for their products at a minimum of costs.
Being an old user of Multiply, I was quite surprised when I visited it again. It really looks like a nice online marketplace, with big pictures up front and a intuitive search engine. I also like the ability to shop for multiple items and just pay for it only once using their many payment options. I always found it a big hassle to discuss and meet up with each seller for all the items I wanted to buy. The new system also allows the buyer to see if an item is available in their particular variant immediately.
