Le Bistro D'Agathe is a place I've heard both good and bad things about. Despite the mixed reviews I wanted to try it out for myself and the perfect opportunity came when they offered up a deal on CashCashPinoy. Seeing the long redemption period, my procrastination reared its ugly head until the expiry date was a few days away. I had to make a reservation to redeem the coupons lest they go to waste.
Armed with clear instructions from the restaurant, Irene and I ventured forth into the unfamiliar part of Makati (at least to me). What greeted us was a cheerful exterior in bright primary colors. I later found out that this place was previously occupied by Fat Michael's, a sister restaurant of The Frazzled Cook.
The interior was quaint and rustic with its walls adorned with multiple paintings. The furniture was nothing fancy, but everything was clean.
The waitstaff who attended to us was very good, efficiently handling our coupons as well as offering suggestions regarding the menu, and to think she was only and to think she was by her lonesome attending to 3 tables.
Irene and I decided to get 1 set menu and then just add another main course. Scanning the menu, I found out that the price of the set depends on what main course chosen. While waiting for our orders, a complimentary basket of bread with some salted butter was laid down on out table.
Each set comes with a starter, my choice was the Terrine, a French meatloaf. The appetizer had a similar taste to pate since we could taste the liver in it. The ingredients are coarser and has more texture than the usual pate. Irene and I both enjoyed this, we ate it with some of the leftover bread.
While we were enjoying our appetizer, the chef came out and asked how everything was going, we also saw him going over to the other tables to do the same.
My choice for the main course was Steak Tenderloin in Bleu Cheese (P890), cooked medium. I'm not really a fan of bleu cheese but it intrigued me how it would be incorporated. I could immediately detect the distinctive blue cheese smell even before the plate was placed before me. The steask was cooked perfectly and the bleu cheese gravy went surprisingly well with the steak. The steak was not the best part was it had lots of flavor. The siding of sliced marble potatoes was nicely done, roasted, with a bit of crunch outside.
Irene selected the Pork Tenderloin in Tarragon Sauce (P390). The dish came with a cup of rice, which was perfect for the sauce. The tarragon sauce was delicious while the pork was cooked just right so it was still tender.
For dessert, Apple Pie or more accurately Tarte Tatin, a decidedly French dessert. Irene was actually expecting a slice of American apple pie. We digged in and was pleasantly surprised that the dessert was only slightly sweet, just enough to tickled our taste buds but not to make it cloying. This dessert was a nice end to our meal.
Le Bistro d'Agathe is by no means the most beautiful restaurant but its clean and serves wonderful French food. The waitstaff and chef were both very attentive and were constantly inquiring how everything was. A simple well cooked meal trumps a fancy mediocre meal any day.
