22 Prime at the Discovery Suites has made a name for itself serving some of the best steaks in the metro, with its fine attention to detail. This time they have added Cochinillo Asado to the menu, a decidedly Spanish dish but quite similar to our the local lechon. I got a chance to try this sinful dish a couple of weeks ago .
The Cochinillo Asado is offered as a 3 course set menu good for 2 people at P1,850+ which includes a soup, the cochinillo and dessert.
A bowl of Spanish Garlic and Pimenton Soup is served first. The pimenton or Spanish paprika adds a nice dark hue to the broth as well as heady roasted flavor, teaming up well with the garlic. I loved the deep flavored broth, which I later found out was made from the bones of the cochinillo.
The Cochinillo Asado is served on a wooden slab atop roasted marble potatoes, mushrooms and a side of home made peach chutney.
Its quite a large serving at 550 grams, definitely good for 2 people. The thin crispy skin is the hallmark of a cochinillo that no lechon can duplicate because of the age of the pig.I was also surprised about how flavorful the meat was considering the only I can usually describe the meat is that its tender.
The peach chutney is another factor in kicking up the taste, its sweet with a bit of cayenne pepper, serves to balance out the smoky flavors of the skin and meat.
Finish the meal off with a plate of dessert samplers, my favorite was the chocolate pudding.
22 Prime’s Cochinillo Asado is a great addition to their menu, it gives people who don’t eat beef like my wife and mom a nice option. It also enables us beef eaters a chance to savor our piece of steak in peace.
