Ever since I got a taste of Bono Artisanal Gelato I’ve been constantly craving for it. I found out what true gelato really tasted like and I see other gelato stores in a different light. The only problem was it was located in SM Makati, a bit far to regularly satisfy the craving. Fast forward to yesterday, July 24, 2013 when they finally opened their branch at The Podium. This means more trip there to have Bono for their awesome gelato because it is so near our house.
I found the Podium branch much much nicer. It’s located on the ground floor, just across from Wild Flour. The laboratorio, where they make all the gelato is sealed in glass so you can everything that happens inside. The Cattabriga gelato machine is also in full view as it slowly moves to make your favorite flavors. The much much higher ceiling also makes it more airy and cool.
Together with the new branch they also introduced new flavors under their Dietetico (low sugar) line, which uses all natural sugar substitutes like Stevia, etc. The flavors in the Dietetico line are Cappuccino, Lemon Basil and Choco Greco (Greek yogurt + chocolate).
I tried out the Cappuccino and knew it was what I was going to have. I love their wafers, which they include in every cup of gelato but I’ve never tried their cones. I took this as an opportune time to try since it also photographs quite well. The coffee taste was strong yet smooth with Malagaos cacao nibs providing a nice texture.
Their make all their cones and wafers in the store so its fresh and tasty.
Irene was hoping they had Taho (soybean curd) on the menu today since she’s loved that. Although they did not have sago/tapioca today, it still tasted great. The dark sauce on top of the taho gelato is made from coco sugar and provides a nice clean sweetness. If you like green tea/matcha then you’ll surely enjoy the Matcha Green Tea with Adzuki red beans, like my friend Yedy.
I get a kick out of introducing people to Bono and watching their reactions. This time around it was Pong of the Googly Gooeys first time to try Bono Gelato and he loved it so much he had two cups. One Brownie Fudge and one Tahitian vanilla. You might also want to try the Rogue (P180), a little sundae creation they whipped up before for Rogue Magazine. I thought they had removed it from the menu, apparently it lives on in Podium. The Rogue has roasted pecan and homemade toffee in a brown butter gelato topped with Elijah Craig small batch bourbon spiked butterscotch sauce. I’ve had this before and it was yummmm.
I’ve been informed that they are coming out with a Thai milk tea flavor but I’m hoping they succeed in making a HK Milk Tea one. Some flavors that were not big sellers will hopefully be a better received in Podium like the Lavender, Buttered Popcorn and Rootbeer Float.
The Podium branch is also offering free delivery for a minimum purchase of P1,000. Areas covered are New Manila, San Juan, Greenhills, Horseshoe, Wack-Wack, Mandaluyong, Kapitolyo, Ortigas Center, Corinthian Gardens, Corinthian Hills, Valle Verde, Pasig (parts), Acropolis, Greenmeadows, Eastwood, White Plains, St. Ignatius, Blue Ridge, Cubao (parts). Those outside the coverage area (see map above) will just incur a fee. Call their store number at 995-6098 or City Delivery at 87878.
Have you had a taste of Bono yet? If not, this is the perfect time to check it out since Podium is more convenient than trooping to SM Makati.
For me, Bono Artisanal Gelato is the best gelato in the Philippines, bar none.
