One rainy Sunday, we trooped to Makati to check out Frangos Portuguese Style Chicken. I’ve been hearing great things about this place specializing in Portuguese chicken. I had been tempted all throughout Canada but my mom does not like Portuguese spices so we skipped those places.
Frangos has a number of parking spaces in front of it, easy during the Sunday but I’ve heard it’s a bit hard to park during weekdays. The places is spacious with ample spaces in between tables with the main focus on the wide open kitchen. There’s a blackboard menu above the kitchen but the staff will provide menu for easier perusing.
There’s lots of cool chicken related details including one above the hand washing area.
Chourico Queijo Quesadillas (P230). The staff recommend this one for our started and it was really tasty with a fair amount of chorizo and lots and lots of cheese.
Frangos Chicken (P515/whole, P285/half, P160/quarter). The main reason we came to Frangos was for this plate of chicken which takes 20-25 minutes to cook because it is freshly grilled. Nice aroma with beautiful charred skin with a pretty sheen to it of the different Portuguese spices.
It’s served with 3 sauces, Piri Piri, Chili Garlic and Harissa. I like a mix of all three for a burst of flavor that plays well together. The chicken skin is very tasty and is where you get the biggest concentration of flavor but the meat is not tasteless and still has a fair amount of it. What surprised us was how juicy it was, I prefer the breast part which is usually cooked a bit dry but Frangos makes it so tender and juicy. We ordered some of their Frangos rice (P45), java rice like yellow rice to go with our roast chicken.
Lauren had an order of Pocket Pita Bread (P45) that she stuffed with rice and chicken.
We washed down our food with a bottle of Stanford and Shaw Ginger Ale (P265). It’s so fresh there’s even a drink by date. Nice to support local ventures like these that aim to make a better quality product. There’s a stronger ginger taste to this that might surprise other people especially those used to Canada Dry.
All three of us enjoyed our quick lunch at Frangos Chicken and with Lauren voiced her approval, I foresee a number of repeat visit here. If chicken is not to your liking, they have some beef and seafood dishes but you’d be regretting not getting the Portuguese chicken.
