When we were planning our trip to Honk Kong last year, we decided to stay somewhere in Hong Kong Island. We exclusively been staying in the Tsim Tsa Tsui area in Kowloon Island. This time around we looked for a hotel within our budget of around P5,ooo, that need not be near the tourist district. We figured the difference would more than cover the extra transportation costs. We finally settle on Hotel IBIS Central and Sheung Wan. Even though the word Central is in the hotel name it is really situated in the Sheung Wan district, just beside it.
One of the things we look for in a Hong Kong hotel is whether the complimentary Airport Express Bus Shuttle stops at or near the hotel. To get to Hotel Ibis, you take the quick Airport Express then take the H1 bus bound for Western Market at Hong Kong Station. The bus will drop you right beside the hotel’s side street. You can just pull your baggage thru the side door and up the elevator.
The ground floor has a Starbucks and a convenience store and there are a number of food outlets nearby including Lin Heung Tea House (which I only discovered on the last day).
The hotel lobby is located at the 5th floor, this is the hallway that will greet you.
The lobby is bright and clean, with very efficient staff that are fluent in English so check in was a breeze. We paid around P5,500 per night, booked thru Agoda.
There is also two computers with internet connection if ever you forgot to bring yours.
Le Bar is also housed on the 5th floor while the Taste restaurant serving an international breakfast is on the 6th floor. This is Hong Kong so I’d forgo eating in the hotel for a honest to goodness local breakfast at nearby cha chaan tengs.
The hallways are carpeted yet clean but just wide enough for people not to bump into each other. Despite the proximity, we hardly ever heard any noise inside the room.
Our room was a Standard Twin Room with a city view. We just push together the two beds with Lauren taking the middle portion. The beds are elevated so you can see that the laminated flooring is very clean. The room is fairly small but no worries since we would not be spending that much time there except for sleeping.
Here’s the view thru our big window. It’s so high up that those with a fear of heights so stay away.
There’s a 32 inch LCD up on the way as well as a small safe and ref. There are some open shelves and a small wardrobe closet.
Air conditioning is controlled using this nice wall system, no more guessing what the knob says. They also trumpet a 15 min problem solution guarantee, we asked for some pillows and towels and they were promptly delivered within 15 minutes.
Space is really maximized, the door to the toilet is placed diagonally to squeeze out a little more room to move around.
The toilet is also very clean with a separate enclosed shower area (this is my non negotiable requirement). There are shampoo and body wash dispenser in case you left your toiletries.
Hotel IBIS Central and Sheung Wan is a pretty good option for a quick getaway in Hong Kong. The neighborhood has a nice mix of old and new. The tram is about 3 blocks away while the MTR/subway is about 5 blocks away. Walking is nice since there are lots of interesting things to see. If the price is right, we would definitely stay here again to explore the area more.
