I had a chance to sample the Yellow Chicken Festival of Wee Nam Kee before they launch it to the public on May 1. I’ve had good experiences at their Serendra branch but this time around the venue was the one at the new Glorietta 2, which is lots more spacious and even has a large function room
The Yellow Chicken Festival will start from May 1 to June 30 and will be available at the New Glorietta 2 and Serendra branches only. The yellow chicken is the same exact chicken they use in Singapore. Wee Nam Kee decided to bring in the yellow chicken upon the prodding of many of its customers who want to replicate their experience in Singapore.
Have a look at the comparison between the local chicken and the Yellow chicken imported from Singapore/Malaysia. The local ones weighs about 1.4kg while the yellow chicken comes in at around 1.9kg. The skin is thicker and as you can see is yellow due to a diet primarily of corn.
Although the star of the night was the yellow Hainanese chicken, we also had other dishes to go with it.
Stir Fried Clams in Spicy Sauce (P280). This dish uses the same sauce as the chili crab, perfect for those who don’t want to mess up their hands. The spiciness level was also well within my limits. Any dish with clams is good with me but with the enticing sauce, a side order of mantou should be mandatory.
We also tried the Marmite Pork Ribs (P270). I’ve never tried Marmite before but the pork pieces were surprisingly enticing. Irene and I were telling each other that we’ll definitely order this in the future.
The star of the night finally arrived, in a mix of roasted and steamed. The Hainanese Yellow chicken (P388/quarter) is priced at a premium over the local chicken (P268/quarter) but that to be expected. One taste and we were transported to Singapore, the chicken really makes a world of difference. Look at the prized jellied fat from the chicken wings, yum.
For dessert we tried their new Warm Roti with Milk Tea sauce (P115). It was a bit weird making roti into a dessert sans the de rigueur curry dipping sauce. This one actually tasted quite delicious especially the sweetish banana
Do you want the authentic Singapore Hainanese chicken experience in the Philippines? Then head on over to Wee Nam Kee for the Yellow Chicken Festival starting May 1. If the take up is good, they might just keep it on the menu permanently. (crossing my fingers)
*Take note that the Yellow Chicken Festival is available at The New Glorietta 2 and Serendra branches only.*
