Yabu recently introduced two new additions to its menu, Menchi Katsu and Soft Shelled Crab Katsu, to give us consumers more options. It just seems to add to my conundrum when eating at Yabu, there are just so many thing I want to order on the menu but sadly I only have one tummy.
Menchi Katsu Curry (P370). This katsu is made up of ground pork and beef, basically Japanese hamburgers, but with an added cheese surprise. Irene would have loved this, but since she does not eat beef, she skipped this.
The one I tried was served with curry but you can have it served plain. The oozing cheese just coats the whole katsu up, add the slightly spicy curry and you’ve got a wonderful melange of flavors. Cheese lovers should enjoy this immensely.
Soft Shell Crab Katsu Set (P480). I was expecting a number of pieces of soft shelled crab since the once I’m used to are fairly small but Yabu‘s are huge. The picture above is just one half (the better looking one) since the legs from the other seemed to have been lost. Crunchy and juicy and a burst of crab flavor, a bit of meat and crab fat, quite decadent.
The soft shelled crab is served with a Ponzu and Layu sauce. The traditional ponzu sauce if given a kick by adding Yabu’s own layu sauce, a chili and garlic concoction. The sauce enriches the flavors of the soft shelled crab by adding a spicy and tart element. This is more suited for the seafood dishes, for the meat dishes I suggest you get some layu sauce for a new katsu experience.
I’m glad that Yabu has opened up in Magnolia and Mall of Asia, that just means it is now easier to get a table at the Megamall branch. I heard they are also opening in SM Southmall and SM Aura in the Fort very soon.
