B & T (Burritos and Tacos) Mexican Kitchen is the newest Mexican restaurant to open in the Metro. I saw the place as it was being constructed since its at the ground floor of the building also occupied by Masuki and Maki Place. I got real excited when I saw the words Chicken Mole, been hearing about this for many seasons of Ugly Betty. That’s right, Ugly Betty, the US tv show, I loved the color and humor of the show.
The place is a burst of green, orange and black. The ceilings are high and the arrangement is quite good giving it a nice relaxing feel. The waitstaff are helpful but you could still see the slight confusion when asking questions, which is quite favorable for a recently opened establishment.
Quickly placing our orders, since the menu is mostly similar to Ristra’s but with some notable additions like the chicken mole, Mexican burger and Pizza. The similarity is no surprise since the owner, Philip, was one of the original partner’s before venturing out and opening his own Mexican restaurant.
Chips and Cheese (P95). I would have preferred Guacamole but was outvoted by Irene and Grace. The chips looked the colors of Christmas with red and green chips flanking the usual yellow corn chips.
Chicken and Carnitas Quesadilla (P310). Irene again ordered her favorite quesadilla this time with a mix of chicken and carnitas (braised pork). Irene said this tasted better than the both Ristra’s and Hermanos because there’s more stuff making it thicker and tastier.
Tacos (P310). Grace’s order of 3 tacos with different meats inside.
Chicken Mole Meal(P320). I actually did not know what mole is, and found out that it contained chocolate and 20 other spices. I had a wow moment but tempered with a bit of hesitation because of the chocolate thinking it might be too weird. But my curiosity still won out in the end. Got my mole topped with lime cilantro rice, as per their suggestion and it was perfect. The citrusy taste of the rice complimented the slight chocolate taste of the mole. It’s served with 3 flour tortillas on the side where you could make a soft taco on your own as I did. A fair warning the serving is very big and should be shared with two people. In the end, I took home half of my order to eat it again at dinner. (happy, happy)
- mole – is one of the most representative dishes of Mexico, especially for celebrations. The consumption of mole is strongly associated with celebrations. In Mexico, to say “to go to a mole”means to go to a wedding (Wikipedia)
As we were halfway thru our meal, Philip sent over some Horchata. It is a Mexican drink made of rice, almonds and cinnamon. It was very refreshing and tasted strongly of almonds and cinnamon. I loved it and it matched our food and served to cleanse our palettes.
I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch as well as my leftovers from B and T and can’t wait for the chance to go back. I want to try the Mexican burger that Jane has been raving about as well as the interesting Mexican Pizza. All of us felt more relaxed with the atmosphere as well as the level of cleanliness.
