I love bbq and used to man our grill occasionally when we still lived in Davao. Now that we live in the condo, I had to give up my dreams of being a grill master. Last week, we tried out the Barbecue by the Pool at the Peninsula Manila. They have a selection of meats and seafood plus appetizers, side dishes and dessert.
The location where they hold the cookout buffet is between the gazebo of Spices and the pool. It’s a semi enclosed area so you get a feel of the poolside but with privacy. The ambiance feels like you are in someone’s backyard.
We started off the meal with some amuse bouche selections like Asparagus and Orange salad, Greek Pasta salad and Beetroot and Goatcheese salad.
More choices for appetizers like salads and soup are available from the table. I’d caution you to temper your enthusiasm lest you get full even before starting the barbecue meats and seafood.
Time to barbecue, take you pick from Angus beef burgers, sausages, lamb chops, steak, chicken, jumbo prawns and salmon skewers. You can also customize your meats and seafood with their special flavored salts (saffron, herbs, chili).
Hand over your plate to the chef and he’ll cook your choices and have it sent to your table upon completion. The fire is mesmerizing when taken together with the wonderful aromas wafting around.
Here’s some of the things we had, sausages, steak and lamb chops are all good choices. Pair it with some of their special sauces and chimichurri.
I could not help but try the jumbo prawns, I initially took only 1 prawn thinking it might not be as flavorful as smaller ones. A little tip, once you starting barbecuing is to ask for the calamansi butter, perfect sauce for the seafood but it can also be good for the meat and main dishes.
Want a little break from barbecue then you can get do some carbo loading via mac and cheese, baked potato, sweet corn and rice.
Had enough of the savory dishes? It’s time to get some some dessert from the spread.
If you prefer a colder sweet ending then you should try their teppanyaki ice cream corner. Pick your flavor and toppings and the chef will mix it up for you on top of the cold stone.
Barbecue by The Pool at The Peninsula Manila happens every Friday and Saturday of March, 2015. The buffet is priced at P1,750 ++ for adults and P990 for children.
