There’s a dearth of real smoked bbq restaurants in Manila so every time I hear of one, I’m always eager to try. The Smoking Joint in BF is one place that specializes in slow cooked bbq smoked right in front of the store. The smoked is situated on the right side beside the entrance. Owned by Tony Fernando and his wife, they’ve tapped Chef Dino Dizon to take the culinary cudgels. Chef Dino has been experimenting with different local woods to fuel their smoker depending on availability.
The decor is simple with sturdy wooden furniture and brick wall giving off a cozy, laid back charm. It’s a place you can wear whatever you like and enjoy your food.
Start off with a BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich (P150). If you were expecting the usual loaf bread sandwich, you will be in for a surprise. They use flat pandesal bread, yes flat, that’s topped with pulled pork, slaw and drizzled bbq sauce. I loved the use of the local pandesal dough in a different way, seemingly like a taco. Delicious way to start our smoky journey.
For those in the mood for burgers, The Smoking Joint gives their patties the low and slow treatment also, sticking them in the smokers for a little bit of extra oomph. I got to try the Chichabacon and Cheese Burger (P250) with crispy beef bacon bits and a heap of cheese sauce. The other burger I tried was the Smoking Joint Burger (P250) topped with generous amounts of fried onion rings. Both burgers use 1/3 pound patties and are served with garlic french fries.
Wash your meat down with their home made Dalandan Tea (P45). Lightly sweet with a nice citrus flavor.
Want a little of everything then get the Meat Platter (P1399). It comes with 100 grams of brisket, 100 grams of pulled pork, half slab of ribs, 3 flat pan de sal, coleslaw, mac and cheese, sweet potato corn melt, smoked seasoned rice, chili soup, 3 jalapeno muffins, 4 beers or crushed drinks.
I suggest getting more Wagyu Beef Brisket (P260) because they are just so good. I use to think ribs made the best bbq but it was the brisket that bowled me over. My favorite side dishes were the Jalapeno corn muffins with the added spicy kick, and the seasoned rice.
We got to try their new Smoked Corned Beef, available as a rice bowl or ala carte. These are also cooked in the smoker so the texture I dislike of fat is removed, what’s left behind is just beautiful tasty meat.
I’m happy The Smoking Joint will be opening in Green Sun, Makati soon. As much as I love their bbq meats, I won’t be able to visit their BF store as often as I want.
