Birdhouse Fried Chicken is the new concept of the Relish Group, who also count Wee Nam Kee, Osaka Ohsho, Kumori Bakery and Rock and Seoul in their restaurant stable. Birdhouse will open on Sept.1, 2016 at the swanky Food Hall at the 4th level of Uptown Place Mall BGC.
There’s no secret to what they are serving, good ol’ fried chicken, something Filipinos can’t get enough of.
Birdhouse Fried Chicken serves only thigh and drumstick pieces done a couple of ways together with a choice of 5 sauces (peach bbq, green goddess, milk gravy, garlic ranch, truffle ketchup) and 5 sides (dirty rice, elote corn, mac and cheese, garlic fries, coleslaw).
This is the Barnyard A (P165), Chicken Tenders with Dirty Rice, and Chicken Skin. This was Lauren’s order so she added a side of Mac and Cheese (P50) because she does not eat dirty rice.
I did not even get to taste the tenders but I’m sure she loved them because she asked for another order. She gave her approval for both the tenders and the mac and cheese, high praise she does not give lightly. Her choice of sauce was the milk gravy which she enjoyed.
Irene got the Barnyard D (P255), two pieces fried chicken, 1 side, 1 sauce and chicken skin. Irene and I seldom eat the skin except for fried chicken wings so the meat should be well marinated for us to like it. Birdhouse hits it all with crispy skin and flavorful meat to the bone. This is now one of our favorite fried chickens in Manila. My favorite sauce is the peach bbq which has a slighly sweet taste.
We shared the Elote Corn and we both loved it. We forgot to have it shredded so it was a bit of a mess to eat but did not detract from our enjoyment.
Most of the meals at Birdhouse come with a crispy appetizer of Crispy chicken skin, cut into bite sized pieces that are equally easy to eat as well as dip in the sauces.
Barnyard E/Salted Egg Lava Chicken Sandwich (P295). This is guaranteed to dominate your social media feed just because it’s salted egg, a hip ingredient of the moment. This sandwich started out as gravy stuffed but they could not make it right and somehow nonchalantly stumbled upon salted egg. The sandwich is huge and comes with a black bun, some relish and a garlic aioli made from salted egg whites.
I found it really crispy even after I left it sitting for a while, meat was juicy and there was a generous amount of salted egg yolks. I just found the sandwich too heavy and would suggest people share one.
Other things I got to try were the Garlic fries, strong garlic flavor and nice texture and the coleslaw which has gochujang mixed in. You can wash your food down with their refreshing Peach Iced Tea (P60)
Dessert is another one that will get a lots of pics, Waffle with Vanilla Ice Cream and Chicken Skin (P150). It actually nothing special except for the chicken skin shock factor to a dessert given it a sweet and salty combination.
Birdhouse Fried Chicken has lots of things going for them and they are still adding more stuff in the future. People who love spice might have to wait a bit because they don’t have any spicy sauces but they can request the kitchen to sprinkle spicy seasoning on their chicken.
