Boon Tong Kee

July 24, 2010 by Richard

One of the more popular places in Singapore that serves Hainanese Chicken Rice or HCR is Boon Tong Kee. We had been to this branch in Whampoa West beside the Boon Keng MRT station. Situated in a residential neighborhood, I was surprised to see the restaurant packed. We had to wait a few minutes before a table was available for us.

We had to order the star of the meal, Hainanese Chicken Rice (HCR).The chicken was large and fatty, the requirements for good HCR. The chicken meat was flavorful and juicy, dip it into any of three sauces, dark soy sauce, chili or ginger sauce.

We also ordered Coffee Ribs, we chose this because its interesting. We were in for a surprise as this was an excellent dish. The tender ribs were full of subtle coffee flavor released with each bite.

Another wonderful dish was the Cereal Prawns, fried oat coated prawns. The oat mixture was so good, we were dipping the de-shelled shrimps again and again in it. It was sweet yet had a hint of spice which was addicting.
The Fried Tofu was very crispy yet the tofu was still so smooth, dipped into a sweet creamy sauce akin to condensed milk produced a wonderful sensation in the mouth.

Sauteed Frog Legs in Chili

We have already tried 3 of the very well known HCR restaurants in Singapore namely Wee Nam Kee, Boon Tong Kee and Pow Sing. We have yet to try Tian Tian in Maxwell Hawker Center. My take is that the difference in taste among them all is very little, it just comes down to each person’s taste and what they look for in their HCR. Some people look for the best chili or ginger sauce, since I don’t like them both, I stick to the chicken.
