Breka Bakery and Cafe, Vancouver

November 23, 2013 by Richard

We were strolling along downtown Vancouver when we felt a bit tired and was looking for a place to have a snack and rest up. Eschewing the chain shops like Blenz, Tim Hortons and Starbucks, we stumbled upon Breka Bakery and Cafe around the corner from Robson Street. The place looked really inviting with its brown wood deck with grey metal chairs.

When we stepped inside, we immediately felt a sense of ease. Breka has different seating options, from a large communal table to small coffee shop tables to counters facing the street. We wanted to get seats in the couches but they were all taken, good thing once we finished ordering, a table freed up.

There are also nice funky touches on the walls of the mostly white interiors. I want those metal coffee decor on the wall. Another big plus is that they have free wifi, something a bit harder to come by in Canada.

Breka has a large display case of their daily baked products from savory to sweet. Since it was coffee and snack time, we gravitated towards the sweets. There’s a lot and a certain amount of willpower is needed in order to avoid ordering too much. If you fancy a more savory snack, they also have some sandwiches that should hit the spot.

Irene and I each picked one cake, I decided on a Red Velvet Cheesecake. I was enticed by the nice alternative red and white colors. It looked innocently enough but after one bite, Irene and I both said this was the best rendition we’ve had so far and to think that we are not fans of red velvet. Each forkful was a mix of smooth cream cheese and bouncy sponge cake.

The other cake we picked was a Tiramisu. This one was nothing special.

Lauren loved her big chocolate chip cookie so much she kept nagging us for a few days to go back and but more at Breka.

Kona Mocha Ice Blended (CDN$4.5/medium). Strong coffee flavor, no scrimping as you can really smell the aroma, that quickly perked us up.

We loved Breka Bakery and Cafe so much the next time we were in Downtown Vancouver, we went there again to rest and have a bit of a snack. Irene and I got the red velvet cheesecake again while Lauren devoured another chocolate chip cookie and even bought another one to eat later on.
