Calea is another shop that we were advised not to miss during our recent trip to Bacolod. Starting off as a single cake shop before the L’Fisher hotel, it now spans multiple branches around Bacolod. We visited the original branch after the lunch at Bob’s, where you could see that we purposely did not have any dessert.
Entering the store, we were not prepared for the visual assault on our senses by immense display of cakes. Rows and rows of cakes in two large refrigerated cases as well as more in the see thru freezer. We were hard pressed to choose among all of that so we enlisted the aid of the helpful staff.
Imported Chocolate Cake (P85). We were informed that this was their best seller. I’m not really a fan of chocolate but I still kept an open mind on trying almost everything. The chocolate cake was essentially two layers of cake sandwiching a generous layer of custard, a pleasant surprise for us. I only had a spoonful or two of the cake but eating the custard together with the chocolate cake tempered the chocolate taste for me.
Strawberry Semifreddo (P80). I spied a pink looking dessert in the freezer window and immediately ordered it. Layers of sponge cake with chocolate and strawberry ice cream, then topped with chocolate and strawberry syrup. I love frozen desserts and this was no different, but the liqueur would preclude serving this to children. Normally, I don’t really like sponge cakes but mixing it with the ice cream, syrup and the liqueur made it quite enjoyable.
Frozen Cream Puffs (P85). Carlo’s order, a favorite of his. I got a little taste since I was busy with my semifreddo. I did not really like this one since the cream was frozen and had the consistency of frozen ice crystals for me. The small dollop of custard was good though, almost similar to the one from the chocolate cake.
We heard lots of hype about Calea’s cakes, and we were happy it did not disappoint. Prices were very affordable and if not for my full stomach, I would have wanted to have some more. I can’t wait to go back to Bacolod and have more Calea cakes.
