I first discovered Carmen’s Best Ice Cream way way back in 2011 at the Ultimate Taste Test and Yummy Eats. They’ve come a long way since then, they started with plastic packaging and look at it now, it can go up with the best in the world with the blue body and gold top.
Carmen’s Best was started by Paco Magsaysay because he had ready access to fresh milk and cream courtesy of Holly’s Farms, where his dad was one of the partners.
Paco has kept on adding flavor after flavor to their repertoire but Lauren and I still counts the Salted Caramel as our ultimate favorite. We find it hard to try buying a new variant because there’s no taste testing. This won’t be a problem anymore because they’ll be opening their first ever scooping store at the Century City Mall.
I got a rare chance during our Alabang staycation to visit the Carmen’s Best ice cream factory. The factory was actually beside Paco’s house in Ayala Alabang but it will be transferred to a bigger location. I’ve always loved watching shows like “How It’s made” so this was a treat in itself.
Paco started the tour with what goes in to their ice cream, premium ingredients carefully selected starting with fresh milk and cream. This makes their product really creamy and can go head to head with some of the world’s best ice creams.
Everything is weighed so that each and every batch is consistent , they take quality control really seriously that’s why they produce such a great product.
Here’s a peek at their industrial ice cream machine and blast freezer.
We also got to meet the face behind the name, Carmen, Paco’s oldest daughter, during the ice cream factory tour.
Tour done, it’s time for ice cream. Paco prepared a special soft serve ice cream that he does not usually sell this. Lauren was super excited to try it out, and if she could could give a giant thumb’s up she would have. She said it tasted like the ones she had from Japan and other countries, milky and creamy. A far cry from what they serve here in the Philippines, the only one similar is the one served at Mother’s Crepe.
We also got a taste of their newest flavor, the Hokey Pokey which is honeycomb toffee. It’s quite good but I still preferred the salted caramel.
During another event, I was so surprised to see that a lot of people don’t know nor have tasted Carmen’s Best ice cream. You owe it to yourself to get a taste of one of the best ice creams around and it’s locally produced.
