I attended a murder mystery dinner last month at Edsa Shangri-la Manila’s Paparazzi entitled “Casino Fatale“. This was my first time to attend a dinner like this and I honestly did not know what to expect. The dinner consists of an interactive theater plus a 4 course dinner prepared by Chef Robert Cauchi and is priced at P3,450 net.
The outside of Paparazzi had been decorated nicely to get guests into the murder mystery feel. People were chatting and having some cocktails before heading into the restaurant for the dinner show.
After a while, the actors for the murder mystery started mingling around with the guests. They actors from Get Real Theatre Company HK were already fully in character, each one talking and interviewing the guests as if they were already a part of the show.
After about 15 minutes, guests were instructed to enter the restaurant and take a seat in their assigned tables.
The Murder Mystery revolves around the dead body of Donny Six Fingers and a missing jewel. We were given papers to ask us to solve the murder garnering clues throughout the night.
After a little introduction scene, we were served the first course was Yellow Fin Tuna carpaccio. Seared perfectly with a juicy and red center then topped with a shallot and caper remoulade plus a surprisingly good avocado and truffle tarte.
A new scene followed and even featured the actors asking for audience participation. This diner even stood up to sing with the actors, it was great to see so many people so game to join in the fun.
2nd course was Tortellini filled with pumpkin puree with fresh sage and butter. Delectable that even my non vegetable seating seatmate, Richie, finished it in the blink of an eye.
More audience participation ensues together with more of the story unfolding. This time around a couple of guests were asked to put a contraption on their head while another guest would attempt to throw something into it. The whole restaurant was in a laughing fit while this was happening.
3rd course was Lamb Cutlets “Milanese” style. Lamb chops stuffed with buffalo mozzarella, breaded then pan fried and served with a side of preserved tomato with basil and bell peppers. Slice the chops and the mozzarella seeps out a bit giving it an extra does of creaminess when you eat it with the lamb meat. The tarty preserved tomatoes plays a nice contrast to the gamey lamb.
The final course was dessert, a Millefoglie of Chocolate. Beautiful layers of dark chocolate sheets with white chocolate mousse and rose water gel in between topped with a chocolate sheet mimicking a playing card. Perfectly in theme but a shame to eat.
I was not able to correctly guess the ending but I nevertheless had an unforgettable experience that night so I highly recommend attending one of their future theater dinners.
Paparazzi at the Edsa Shangri-la is holding another theater dinner on October 2-4,2014, this time featuring Faulty Towers. The Faulty Towers is a well beloved theater production that will be performed by Interactive Theatre International.
