Diner on 16th is one of the new restaurant that is part of same complex as Taco Vengo in Kapitolyo. They opened in early December and just started their lunch service to go with their soft opening dinner service. They specialize in American comfort given their own surprise twist.
Diner on 16th has a retro diner theme with a predominance of black and white punctuated with bright red spots. There’s a nice mural with recognizable pop culture people and brands.
Buffalo Mozzarella Sticks (P298). These are large and thick sticks with gooey mozzarella. We did not taste the buffalo sauce they mixed into the batter though. Despite that, this was a well executed dish, no hint of oil at all adding to our enjoyment.
Chicken and Waffle Nachos (P290). A unique take on nachos with waffles substituting for chips and with chunky chicken pieces on top as well as the usual nacho trimmings. A little tweaking of the waffle nachos will make this filling dish even better, we suggested they cook the waffles more so there a certain crunchy outside to mimic what you can experience from chips.
Sriracha Wings (P280). Expecting the run of the mill small to medium sized wings and be flabbergasted like we did when the waitstaff came out with this one. We did a double take when we saw how humongous it was. You can order this one, order rice and share between two people. A little warning though, these are spicy.
Cool down your tongues with their Smores Milk Shake (P134). It’s big, overflowing and thick according to Cy, our dining mate and tasted quite good.
Pot Roast Pork and Kidney Beans Rice Bowl (P190). The roast pork has a nice smoky flavor reminiscent of the charsiu from Cosmos in Manila. Great size and perfect for a quick lunch option.
Soy Ginger Glazed Chicken and Ube Waffles (P249). How could we resist ordering this one. The chicken was nice and crispy with a just the right sweetness soy ginger glaze. The waffle were nicely made, crispy edges with a chewy texture but the ube flavor is very light. Order this if you prefer your main dishes sweet tasting like me.
Waffle Florentine (P265). The chicken pieces in this one is a bit larger than the ones served with the ube waffles and I felt needed a bit more seasoning.
The poached egg on the side are perfectly done and sit on waffle pieces, with bacon, spinach and drizzled with hollandaise sauce.
Diner on 16th excels in frying things as several of our dishes were crisp with nary a hint of oil. The poached eggs are also spot on, and deserves praise as many places mess it up. They still need to tweak a bit but what they do right is offer large servings (gigantic wings) at reasonable prices that fits in with the restaurants in Kapitolyo. I’m excited to go and see what they come up with in the future.
