With a name like Draft Gastropub, I wouldn’t have ever ventured into the place on my own thinking the place was just for drinking. I would have missed the good food they serve if not for an invite from a friend to try it out.
Draft Gastropub actually looks quite intimidating from the outside, looking like a very upscale place. I’ve seen the place teeming with people completely occupying all the seats outside when I passed by one weekend.
Inside, the decor relies heavily on the dark browns of wooden furniture with touches of the whimsy in its long line of empty beer bottles. The main highlights of the bar area is the six beer taps it has serving Beck’s. Hoegaarden, Stella Artois and Leffe brands of beer. The place actually surprised me with its cleanliness, with my preconception of a pub being a bit dirty with their beer stained floors and suspect furniture.
I also had apprehensions about a place that allows smoking as most pubs do but Draft Gastropub had just a very faint trace of it. A quick inquiry and I found out that smoking is not allowed until the wee hours of the night to giving diners a smoke free time to enjoy their food.
Potato Wedges. A nice little starter but a little different because of the dips its served with. The appetizer is served with sweet chili and sour cream, instead of the usual ketchup or mayo. The wedges were large and crispy, a nice dish to tide you by.
Fish and Frites (P350). This is quite a generous serving, with three large sized pieces of Beck’s beer marinated fish fillets with a siding of french fries. The batter was nice and crispy but not too thick to be cloying. The fish inside was tender and succulent, perfectly enveloped by the batter, this is one of the better ones I’ve had.
Pappardelle (P390). This dish gets its name from the pasta variant it uses, which is a large, broad fettuccine. The dish is topped with large slivers of Parmesan cheese to complement the pasta. The dish uses beef ragout as its sauce base, lending it a hearty and flavorful bases that even had Irene giving it praises. She had a little of the pasta and just skipped eating the beef chunks. This is definitely a must order when we return.
Bleu Cheeseburger (P380). This was one big burger, I actually only managed to finish 1/3 of it. The 1/2 pound all beef burger is topped with blue cheese as well as lots of caramelized onions giving it a mix of flavors that surprisingly complemented the beef well.
Draft Gastropub really surprised me with the quality of food it is able to serve. One would think food in a pub would be at the bottom of its list, instead highlighting its many spirits and drinks. A lunch at the place is surprisingly laid back and people looking to escape the crowd may have a “secret” place to escape to. You really sometimes find good food in the unlikeliest of places.
