I’ve been wanting to try Empanada Mas after seeing a number of blog posts about their line of empanada. Their branches are mostly in the south and the ones in Makati are places I rarely go to. I finally chanced upon a branch in Makati Supermarket Alabang when we had a staycation in Acacia Hotel last November.
Empanada Mas‘ empanadas are made using a family recipe that has been passed down for 5 generations. The dough is hand rolled and fried in cholesterol free oil and uses no preservatives.
I got a box of 12 (P360), an assortment of Classic Pork, Spanish Chorizo and Spinach. They also have Classic chicken and Ham and Cheese Jalapeno but they ran out of them and I was’nt willing to wait for them to cook some more.
The first empanada I tried was the Spanish Chorizo, the dough is a chewy while the chorizo packed lots of strong flavors. Each empanada is packed with only a thin, delicate crust enveloping it. You can really see that they don’t shortchange compared to the other cheap stuff out there.
I also liked the classic pork, a variant that you can’t go wrong with. The spinach was not really a match to my tastes.
I also got one dozen Empanaditas (P40/half dozen). I choose the Cheddar Cheese and Cream Cheese and Chives variants, other available variants are Semisweet chocolate and Peanut Butter Fudge. The last thing I got was the Premium Nutella Empanaditas (P65/ half dozen).
The empanaditas are so small you’ll hardly notice eating them, you can literally keep popped them in your mouth. Both my choices were good but the Nutella stole the show, a sweeter form perfect in bite sized pieces to limit the cloying factor. Each small piece is oozing with hazelnut, I suggest heating them up first before digging in.
I think I’m going to have to pass by Cash and Carry more often to grab some more of these addicting empanadas and empanaditas from Empanada MAS.
