A few weeks ago I got 2 boxes of lovely pastries from Hey Gourmet! with varying hues of colors and textures. From deep purple to dark brown, each piece entices you visually. The baker behind these creations is Judy Ang, who I was surprised to find out was only 21 years old and had just recently graduated from college. Her business came about because of a course requirement in school.
Do a quick run through of their menu and you’ll find out that Judy has a repertoire of 21 different flavors of ensaymada. Quite dizzying to choose from their sweet and savory variants.
The first piece I tried was violet colored Purple Yam ensaymada. At first bite, I immediately notice the difference between Hey Gourmet’s ensaymada and my all time favorite Homemade Treasures classic ensaymada. The dough is soft and crumbs a bit, kinda like a soft bun. The topping has a strong ube (yam) punch balanced off by the sharp cheese bits.
The Ferrero was another one that I enjoyed because of the chopped Ferrero Rocher chocolates giving it some fun crunch and texture. The hazelnut buttercream is rich yet was not cloyingly sweet.
The Quezo de Bola was good but could not match up with my favorite. I’d go for the other prettier and eye catching
The other three in the box were the Salted Caramel, Oreo Cheesecake and Tiramisu. I enjoyed the tiramisu, with its rich coffee icing but was unable to try the salted caramel and oreo cheesecake. Irene commented that they were pretty good but would still profess love for the savory one.
The Chocolate Panic and Hershey’s Cookies and Cream are marred visually, having been wrapped in plastic instead of being placed inside the box. I reckon the chocolate panic should satisfy the chocoholics out there, which sadly isn’t me.
The most stunning of all was a savory heart shaped variant, Pork Floss. This was the unanimous favorite, it actually reminded me of the bread that popularized Bread Talk. This one is just softer and had more pork floss, covering virtually every inch of the top. An extra sprinkling of cheese is just bonus.
