K&L Cafe by Blushing Cupcakes is a quaint cafe in White Plains that wants to bring the flavors and charm of Baguio to the metro. Sister owners, Karen and Loren hail from Baguio and have easy access to bring in products and ingredients from the Summer Capital. The place is not the easiest to find but just look for the Pan de Amerikana store with the inverted cars on display and look across to find K&L.
They’ve got a display case packed full of pastries which they make on the premises on the 2nd floor. Their commissary also supplies their cupcake stall, Blushing Cupcakes, located in SM North Edsa. Beside it are assorted goods and products from Baguio ranging from bags to vinegar and even wine.
We started with the Mozz-Ham-rella Sticks (P195). Mozzarella sticks that are kicks up a few notches by hiding loads of ham pieces inside. How can you go wrong with with smoky ham and gooey cheese. Perfect starter that easily shared among a few people.
Irene had the Lola Nena’s Adobong Puti (P209), a version of adobo that uses vinegar in the cooking process with nary a hint of soy sauce. K&L touts itself as the only place serving it in Manila, using an heirloom family recipe inherited from their grandmother. Mountain red rice, salted duck egg and tomatoes are served on the side.
Longganisa Locale (P219). Crumbled longganisa with spaghetti noodles in an olio sauce. A highly enjoyable dish that’s comforting to the taste buds.
They have a number of special juice concoctions that feature produce from Baguio. Strawberry Calamansi (P95), Baguio Honey and Calamansi (P85) and Lemonade with Sagada Orange (P95). I tried the strawberry and the lemonade and both were so good that I felt torn choosing between the two. Both drinks were refreshing with a tangy citrus jolt.
Daddy’s Bourbon American Ribs (P295). K&L Cafe’s best seller has a large piece of rib, basted with their own barbecue sauce creation. Tender with flavors to the bone.
I chose the Open Faced Cordon Bleu (P239). A piece of breaded chicken fillet with strips of bacon on top that’s dribbled with cream sauce. Served with a cup of mountain red rice and vegetables. They give you extra cream sauce that you will thank them profusely for because it is really good. I thoroughly enjoyed my pick after see sawing among a few options.
We finished our meal with coffee and an assortment of desserts. The most impressive was the Ultimate Red Velvet Pancake (P295), 3 big pieces of fluffy pancakes with generous cream cheese in between.
