Maifest is a traditional festival in Germany to herald the coming of Spring. People barbecue outdoors, drink with a lot of merry making involved after being cooped up during the winter. Brotzeit German Bier Bar in Shangri-la Plaza has their own Maifest celebration with limited time dishes and beer.
We started our little spring festival at Brotzeit with what else but a little beer by way of a Munchner Paulaner Lager (P165), a light and clear starter. If you want a non alcoholic beverage, the Fruit Fizz (P150) might be a more suitable choice, made up of cranberry and orange juice with sparkling water.
We were going to try a mix of Maifest limited time dishes as well as some of their bestsellers. I’ll start with the limited time dishes, available until June 30, 2014 only.
The first dish to arrive was Spargelsuppe/Asparagus Soup (P110/cup, P180/bowl). This is a light and creamy soup with bits of smoked ham, perfect to warm the tummy.
Spargel mit Shinken/ White Asparagus Roll (P480). Soft and mildly flavored white asparagus spears wrapped in smoked ham served with tangy German potato salad.
Meeresfruchtes mit Spargeln/ Seafood Patty Cakes (P590). A big piece of patty made up of different seafood like crab and fish, seared to lock in the juices. It sits on a bed of asparagus with lemon butter sauce.
Lungebraten mit Spargeln/ Tenderloin with White Asparagus (P890). A perfectly cooked piece of beef tenderloin surrounded by spears of white asparagus and steamed potatoes. The tenderloin was nicely prepared with a pretty pink center. The potatoes and asparagus were well cooked and balanced out the tenderloin.
The next beer we tried was the limited time Munchner Marzen (P165/300ml). This is a strong yet smooth lager that has a light caramel hue. Taste wise, it falls between my favorite Hefe-Weisen and the Munchner Lager we had earlier.
Maifest Platter (P2400). This humongous platter of meats is good for 5 top 6 people. You can even add P900 for 6 glasses of 500ml Paulaner Beer, which is a pretty good deal. The platter is made up of 2 pcs of Grilled Porkchops, Schwenkbraten/ Pork Skewers plus 8 pcs of their best sausages. Mixed vegetables and potato salad are served on the side.
Lamm Haxe (P980). This is something new to me but it’s part of their regular menu. A big roasted lamb shank served with braised red cabbage and napkin dumplings. The lamb meat was tender and had a nice gamey and smoky flavor.
Schinweinshazen/Baked Pork Knuckle (P1280). I’ve had this one a couple of times before but was always underwhelmed and found it a bit bland. This time around I had the crispy skin and gave the meat a try again. I have to say the flavor has improved, it tasted flavorful now. The sauce on the side just gives it a bit more oomph.
Ripperl/ Honey Bavarian Ribs (P1050). I’m happy they’ve made this limited time dish a permanent part of their menu. This is actually my favorite dish, meaty beer infused ribs with a nice sweet and savory flavor.
Brotzeit is also set to introduce three quick lunch sandwich options that will be available starting June 15, 2014. My favorite among the three was the Schnitzel Sandwich followed by the Spicy Meatloaf Sandwich and lastly the Meatball Sandwich.
Celebrate Maifest at Brozeit Bier Bar and Restaurant with their limited time dishes and beer, available only until June 30, 2014.
