Masatami Shaved Ice serves Hawaiian style shaved ice, a signature dessert of the islands. Its the perfect refreshing treat for the hot tropical climate in Hawaii and the Philippines. They also offer the Taiwanese style which is more like flavored snow. They are currently in 3 locations only, but hopefully they add some more in the malls I frequent.
The Masatami Shave Ice branch I visited was in Robinson’s Galleria and is conveniently located outside the supermarket and even has a couple of tables for sitting. It took me a while before trying the place out despite having some coupons since this summer but I finally got to try it out.
You start off your order by choosing if you want the Hawaiian shaved ice or Taiwanese snow ice. I think most of us are more familiar with the Hawaiian style which has finely shaved ice in a cone then finished off with tasty syrups. Then you choose the flavors and add ons. The server will then get the ice block of your choice and then proceed to make your order.
The first we got to try was the Buko Pandan Ice (P85/large) with Azuki Red Bean (P8), Pearls (P8) and Nata de Coco (P8). Its served in a nice big container that holds all the ingredients inside. Irene and I both tried this out and loved the pillowy smooth ice brimming with buko pandan flavor, that was not cloyingly sweet. The add ons add interesting elements to the dessert but I would have preferred less toppings, I like things more simple.
The 2nd creation we got to try was the Rainbow Shave Ice with Snow Cap (P96). Even before putting shaved ice on the cup, a scoop of vanilla ice cream is first placed then some azuki red beans then the unflavored ice before adding the syrups and then finished off with condensed milk.
They use three syrups in this namely Strawberry, Banana and Bubble Gum but the result of which is a 5 color rainbow because of the overlap causing the colors to change (add science lesson here). WARNING, this dessert is huge!
This should definitely be a big hit with the kids but Irene and I both found it a bit on the sweet side. For me, this just means they don’t dilute their syrups.
Masatami Shave Ice is a nice refreshing treat to beat the heat. My only complaint is they have omitted to include Grape syrup, my all time favorite snow cone variant, in their menu. I don’t know why Grape flavor is such a laggard in the Philippines, despite being very popular in other Asian countries.
