Momo Department Store and Foodcourt in Taipei

March 27, 2011 by Richard

We stumbled upon Momo Department Store when we visited Ikea Taipei for a little shopping. Ikea was located at the basement 1 of Momo. Since it was near lunch time, we sought out the food court, located at basement 2.

Irene and I decided on sharing this set consisting of a bowl of “misua”, meatball soup and a plate of oyster cake since both had eyes on different desserts. I was surprised that I liked the misua since I’ve never been a fan. The oyster cake was still not as good as the one from Ximending.

I had my eyes on milk tea, located beside our table. Tea Ren Tea was the brand name, I was quite excited to try since I had not seen that brand in Taipei yet. I had Irene order for me, a Taro Green Milk Tea (NT70 or P105) with pearls and fresh milk. It cam out to a shocking NT100(P150), including all the add-ons. This was the most expensive milk tea I had during the whole Taipei trip and it was not even large sized. Good thing it was good, there were a lot of real taro bits but I don’t think I would be inclined to order this one again.

Peanut Ball from Guang-An Jie. Freshly made and served in black sugar soup. I had a small bite, the peanut inside was overflowing and the outer cover super chewy. This is the best tasting peanut ball I have ever tasted and puts to shame anything we have here.

After lunch, we decided to do a little shopping. We bought a number of things which because of a promo they were having resulted in us getting a number of GCs. So we decided to come back and spend it the next day.

After the disappointing teppanyaki dinner we had in Shi Lin, we decided on eating at the one in Momo’s food court hoping it would turn out better. It was quite full so we had to wait around 10 minutes before we got seats for the 4 of us.

Each of us ordered a set meal which came with veggies (cabbage and bean sprouts) and self service unlimited rice, soup and soda/tea.

Irene and Grace both ordered the Garlic Lamb Set (NT180 or P270). Sliced lamb cooked in garlic and pepper sauce. It was very good and went very well with the hot plain rice.

Lauren ordered a fish set that I can’t remember what kind. She finished it all so I guess it was good.

I ordered the Pepper Chicken Set (NT220 or P330). When it was served in front of me, I was kinda shocked since it was not what I expected. I did not expect it to be drenched in a red pepper and vinegar sauce. It was really well cooked with lots of acidic and peppery flavor in every chicken piece. I was surprised I could stand the spiciness but it seems the vinegar tempered it a bit, lowering ti to manageable levels. Would I order this again, probably not, since I was lots envious of Irene’s order.

All in all, Momo Department Store was a great unexpected find. Even its food court unearthed a couple of culinary gems.
