Sharyn’s Cansi House and Kuppa Coffee in Bacolod

April 18, 2011 by Richard

On our quest to to find the best places to eat in Bacolod, we arrived at Sharyn’s Cansi House. The place is what you might call nondescript, no menu, plastic chairs and tables as well as an area of pre-cooked food available “turo-turo” (point-point) style.

Sharyn’s is touted as having the best cansi in Bacolod, its even loudly proclaimed in their signage outside. Cansi is the Illonggo version of nilaga (beef bone soup) and sinigang (tamarind soup).

I admit that I’m not a fan of sinigang but for the sake of trying out new things, I kept my taste buds open. We sat down and order a bowl of cansi (P200+) and 2 bowls of rice. This was around mid afternoon and after we had taken a seat it started drizzling outside, a good atmosphere for hot soup.

I had some rice to go with the soup, it was hot and hearty and exudes the feeling of homey warmth with each sip. I was surprised I liked the soup, maybe because the sourness is tempered. I avoided the marrow since I never eat it, while Carlos finished all of it with a bowl of rice with me looking on and shaking my head.

After having our fill of cansi we headed off to try Kuppa Coffee and Tea, a local born coffee shop with more than 55 years of experience. I was confident they knew their coffee when I saw the a big coffee roaster right there inside the store.

I picked an Iced Berry Nut Latte (P75) because I never drink hot coffee. I was surprised at the size of the glass it was served in, for the price it was good value. I loved the taste of the berry syrup mixing with the just right coffee and milk. I liked it so much, I tried to order it in the departure area of the airport but to my dismay they did have ice yet that morning. (boo!)

Carlos opted for some hot stuff ordering a Banana Nut Latte (pic above) and a Hot Chocolate. I was not able to taste either one but Carlos seemed more than happy. I love the tall cup it was served in, very unique as well as the nice design on the foam.

Kuppa also serves lots of food as well as gelato. Its no surprise, locals prefer Kuppa over Starbucks with their reasonable prices as well as the multitude of food options.
