Located across Taipei Main Station is ShinKong Mitsukoshi, this was our first stop after dropping off our baggage at Ambience Hotel. Since it was already past 11am when we reached the department store, we decided to just eat lunch first to avoid the crowd.
We went around the food court at the basement browsing at the offerings of every stall, good thing there were pictures since almost all of the words were in Chinese.
Irene and I decided to get our lunch from the stall above. We were enticed by the curious white block that looked like radish cake and the fishballs. This stall is very interesting in that it had a seating area consisting of a low table and 2 benches. I’ve also seen this kind of store in a couple of food courts also but am not sure if they are the same company but they also have the low tables beside it.
We decided to get one bowl each of “kiampung” (Chinese Paella – 50NT or P75), a bowl of fishballs and a plate of the pseudo radish cake. The kiampung had ample stickiness and contained a few large pieces of stewed meat. It was nice to drizzle some of the fishball soup to wet the rice a bit.
The Fishball soup(45 NT or P67.50) contain large pieces of raddish and three big pieces of fishballs with a hidden surprise, minced meat inside. The meat inside the middle is quite a lot, while the fish ball is very very crunchy compared to those we find here. The soup was also so flavorful that Lauren sequestered it to compliment her McDonald’s meal.
The pseudo raddish cake was just sliced form the big block then topped off with a sweet savory sauce and garnished with toasted garlic. The staff when asked by Irene said this was a popular Taiwanese street food. After tasting it and then rereading the sign, we found out that this was made from rice, that is finely grounded and then shaped into the white block.
G’s meal set (NT120 or P180)is everything you see in the pic, a bowl of stewed pork and egg rice, a piece of porkchop, some veggies and a bowl of assorted balls (fish, meat and squid).
A bowl of cold taho served as our dessert since we were looking forward to getting bubble tea outside after lunch. The taho was not as smooth as we would have liked but the black pearls are very chewy.
The foodcourt was very clean with lots of different food choices. We found the food served was of very high quality unlike what we are used to here.
