The Wholesome Table is a healthy restaurant I never found the desire to try thinking they were only serving salads and other vegetarian dishes. I was recently able to try their summer menu and it was a big surprise. The decor is very woodsy, with plants and green everywhere to complement their wooden furniture,

Salmon Ceviche (P340). Raw Atlantic sustainable salmon tossed with blue and yellow corn, garlic, cilatro, onion, chipotle pepper, avocado and lime. Served with baguette toasts to top the ceviche with for a more filling appetizer. The avocado is an interesting addition, bringing creaminess to this bright and light dish.

Vietnamese Spring Rolls (P290). Their take on this classic dish is by adding avocado and mangoes. Mangoes add sweetness while avocado add creaminess that gives this fresh appetizer a new flavor dimension.

Popcorn Shrimp (P360). Visually, it looks as expected but when you bite, you’ll taste the plantains that have been added into the breading. Served with house made cocktail sauce and spiced vinegar. I’m still torn over which one is my favorite because both went really well with the shrimp.

Grilled Corn on the Cob (P140, +P250 for Blue corn). Simple, sweet and perfect for barbecue. Basted with herb butter, sea salt, parsley and smoked paprika. The blue corn is beautiful but I still prefer the yellow ones.

BBQ Chicken Salad (P330/solo, P490/regular). BBQ chicken fillets with blue corn, tomatoes, slaw, black beans, baked onions, wonton crisps, house-made Kansas city BBQ sauce. This is a salad that is easy to enjoy, lots of crunch textures, with a sweet smoky sauce that will have you licking your forks.

Baby Back Ribs (P490/half, P990/full). Slow braised organic baby back ribs with house-made bbq rub. Served with your choice of sauce (Carolina Gold, Hickory, Texas BBQ) and 2 sides ( corn, baked beans, coleslaw,Jambalaya rice).

My choice for the sauce is hickory and for the side, coleslaw and baked beans. The baked beans are very thick and might be the best I’ve ever had.

BBQ Chicken (P440/solo, P1350/bucket). BBQ free range chicken basted in Texas bbq sauce served with corn, baked beans and coleslaw. An option for those who don’t like pork, still with the smoky aroma and visually pleasing grill marks.

They have a wide range of juices, nut milk and smoothies. I suggest you try the Buco Pandan Milk tea (P260), made with pandan tea, coconut milk, chia seeds, spirulina, and honey. Healthy but quite delicious.

Nanaimo Bar. A popular Canadian dessert named for the city of Nanaimo in Vancouver, British Columbia. It’s a no bake dessert bar with a wafer base, a custard flavored butter icing and melted chocolate. I first tasted this in Butchart Gardens and was taken a back by the intense sweetness. This version uses cocoa nibs, coconut custard butter icing and melted dark chocolate. It was not very sweet but entices with different textures and layers of flavors. I really liked the coconut in the icing.

The Wholesome Table really surprised me, little did I know their kitchens produced such varied dishes that belies it’s woodsy exterior. I’m definitely going back for those finger licking good ribs and baked beans.
