Taco Vengo is one of the hottest restaurants in Kapitolyo. Located in the same compound as Uncle Moe’s, Nav and Longganisa Sorpresa. The newly renovated area is composed of container vans converted into restaurants, a few have already opened like No Reservations but there’s more to come.
We arrived quite early for their lunch service but they let us in while they were preparing. That was very good of them as it’s no fun waiting in the heat outside.
The decor inside is very simple, leaning on the industrial vibe to match with the container van surroundings. They also have an al fresco area that would be well suited for the smokers. I always look for the air conditioned area.
Beer, hot sauce and water adorn the front of their service counter. You go up and place your order here, they’ve got a limited menu focusing on what else but tacos.
Nachos for Machos (P160). How can you resist ordering this with a name like that and ingredients that include chorizo and sous vide egg. Thin nachos chips served as a platter for salsa, chopped chorizo, egg and garnish. A pretty dish that I had to grudgingly mix up to start enjoying. The egg gives the chorizo bits a creamy coating and complements the tangy chunky tomatoes.
They have 5 meat/tofu protein choices you can have served as tacos, burritos and platos (rice/salad). We wanted something lighter so opted for all tacos, 4 of them to be exact.
Tofu Taco (P95) with savory mushrooms. This is a vegetarian option that I heard good things about but the taste was underwhelming. There was a nice crunch from the outside of the tofu pieces but it was bland with the savory mushroom bringing all the flavor.
Steak Taco (P110). This one is served with caramelized onions and a orange chipotle sauce. You know I had to order this because I get anything with orange. This one is really good with a spice level that’s just right for me, the mild orange taste adds a sweet dimension to the taco.
Pork Taco (P95). Pork cheek confit, topped with salsa, sour cream and pork rind/chicharon. They mix a little liver in the mix of the crispy pork cheeks so be warned. I was initially afraid it was too strong but the liver flavor was complimentary and gave it a creamier texture to balance the crunchiness.
Chicken Taco (P95). This is our favorite of the quartet, the chicken strips are coated in a honey soy glaze and topped with a crunch filled cabbage slaw. This one is definitely pleasing to my sweet palate.
Chwaffle ala Mode (P130). A churro cooked as a waffle so the batter, topped with vanilla ice cream and a dollop of dulce de leche. Be sure to leave room for Taco Vengo’s only dessert becase you’ll regret missing it. It has a nice golden sheen and nice sprinkling of sugar but nothing is overly sweet even with the dulce de leche smeared on top of every bite, add the ice cream to get the hot/cold party in your mouth.
I love the new additions to the Kapitolyo eating outlets, and there’s even more in the horizon. Taco Vengo is a definite standout with their beautifully made tacos and that heavenly chwaffle. We’ll definitely be back and I’ll make sure to try the shrimp taco that I missed.
