Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, Hawaii’s No. 1 burger chain, will be opening its first store in the Philippines on August 23, 2014. Teddy’s Bigger Burgers has been voted Hawaii’s best burgers since 2001. The first store will be located at the 3rd floor of Greenbelt 3 in Ayala Center across Nanbantei and Yakimix.
Teddy’s Bigger Burgers currently has 11 locations around Hawaii, 4 in the US mainland, 1 in Japan and 1 in Manila. A number of stores are also in the works for Bangkok.
I got a chance for a little advance taste before they formally open their doors on Aug. 23. Teddy’s Bigger Burgers founder Ted Tsakiris and Rich Stula were on hand to tell us all about how they started and what the brand is all about.
The inside seating area is not that big, about 40 seats since they’ve already removed the big communal table in the middle to facilitate movement. There are also lots of al fresco seating with a nice view of the park. We actually simulated ordering at the counter, fast food style but they are thinking of making it a restaurant setup with servers coming to get your orders.
Ted Tsakiris shared with me that this is their first Hawaiian themed burger shop after a more sleek look for all their previous stores. They realized that they are not only serving burgers but a part of Hawaii thus the change.
We started the sneak taste with some Tiki Wings (P295/6 pcs.). Crisp and juicy chicken wings tossed in a sweet and tangy sauce with chili peppers and I’m guessing pineapple. this is 1 of the 4 menu items that are exclusive to the Philippines. The other items are Chicken Tenders, Fish and Chips and Loco Moco for the one who love rice.
Next we had a platter of Bacon and Cheese Fries (P75+45+35). The bacon and the cheese might be the draws but I quickly realized that the regular spicy seasoning was the one I really enjoyed.
Their smallest burger has a 5oz patty and it is clearly seen how it compares to the next 2 sizes (7 and 9 oz.).
I was initially thinking of ordering the basic burger but when I saw avocado and bacon on their suggested topping list, I knew that was the burger for me. My burger was the Teri Bacado Big Burger (P300+125) with a side of Onion rings (P149). Teddy’s Bigger Burgers uses only 100% pure US Black Angus chuck that goes thru a special grinding method and are char-grilled to medium unless specified upon order.
They used a potato bun for my burger which I really likes, soft but does not disintegrate upon biting. They also have options for a wheat bun or lettuce wrap for the carb averse. The beef patties were meaty, had a nice bite and held really well. I love the addition of the avocado, it adds a buttery mouth feel without the guilt which balances out via the crisp bacon pieces. The onion rings were good but I’d skip that in favor of the spicy fries.
Here’s a nice illustration they’ve put up on the wall to show what goes into a Teddy’s Bigger Burger. Simple burgers with no gimmicks.
I got a side order of Strawberry Milkshake (P120/12 oz.). They are not joking when they tell you their milkshakes are thick, they are so thick you’ll have to let it sit awhile before sipping thru the straw. Their formula is 90% ice cream and 10% milk, so you can basically eat this as a cup of ice cream like I did. I don’t know the brand of ice cream they use but the strawberry is quite close to the one from Haagen Dazs. You can even mix and match with the other avilable flavors like coffee, vanilla, chocolate, banana and peanut butter. I think I’ll go for a banana, strawberry and chocolate next time to mimic a banana split.
Here are some two of the burgers my companions had.
This is a Hawaiian Teddy’s Original Big Burger (P265+70) with a siding of Spicy Fries (P75). A combo is a better deal for only P100, you get fries and a drink.
This is the Kailua Monster Double Big Burger (P440 + 150). Two 5 oz. patties with Teriyaki sauce, grilled mushrooms, grilled onions and Swiss cheese. This looked so big and filling already, I can’t even begin to imagine the Monster Double Biggest Burger with 18oz of beef.
To open with a bang on Aug. 23, 2014, Teddy’s Bigger Burgers will be giving away free burgers to the first 100 in line. The line will start at 7am at the Greenbelt 3 entrance beside Hermes along Makati Ave. Early birds will get even more burgers with the 1st 5 in line getting 1 years worth of burgers (1 per week), 6th to 10th in line get 6 months worth and 11th to 20th get 3 months worth.
Teddy’s Bigger Burgers serves really wonderful burgers but it is definitely on the pricier side.
