Tsumura Sushi Bar and Restaurant Makati

June 18, 2010 by Richard

I was introduced to Tsumura Sushi Bar and Restaurant in Makati after reading about it in a few articles and blogs, this was 2 years ago. The family decided to try and we were hooked on Tsumura from then on.

The first time we came here, it took us a while to find it since its inside a building and doesn’t have a big sign. Once you step in through the 2nd floor parking, you will be greeted by the usual Japanese greetings and see the nice Japanese modern decor. Dark wooden tables on stainless steel against a backdrop of gray stone and big windows give a Zen feel. There is also a sushi bar that is manned by a few Japanese chefs including  Mr. Tsumura himself. I stay away from there since it’s a smoking area, and I don’t like breathing cigarette smoke.

We usually come here during lunch on weekends, since they have a promo of 20% discount on certain lunch sets. The menu is not that nice, just computer printed paper in a clear folder. The dinner menu is much better looking, a fit to the look of the place.

Irene and I ordered from the promo lunch menu, Deluxe Bento for me and Udon and sushi set for Irene, both at 20% discount. We ordered Ebi Tempura teishoku (set meal) for Lauren.

Udon and sushi set comes with a bowl of hot udon, ika (squid) tempura and a plate of tuna and cucumber sushi. I tried some of the soup and it was flavorful while the tempura was very crisp.

The Deluxe bento starts off with Chawan Mushi; one of the best around, every scoop of this steamed egg custard is silky and full of flavor. The lacquer box includes different partitions containing sashimi, tempura, tamago, unagi, pickles and beef usuyaki.

The beef usuyaki is the ultimate reason I order the deluxe bento, it is a beef rolled with garlic, beef fat and golden mushroom. The best way to eat this is whole, so that all the flavors will burst out. Mixed fried rice, clam miso soup and a bowl of cold soba comes with the set.

The Ebi tempura set consisted of 4 large size shrimps, in addition to a piece of okra and eggplant. It also includes a bowl of rice, a couple of appetizers and chawan mushi. The appetizers were not to my daughter liking so I got to try them. The squid salad had a vinegar like dressing which I don’t like. On the other hand, I really liked the vegetable one, great presentation, a hallmark of Japanese cooking.

For dessert, Lauren got ice cream, Irene got fruits with her set and I got coffee jelly topped with vanilla ice cream.

Prices might be higher than other restaurants but the presentation, taste and freshness of the ingredients make it a good value. Add to that the 20% discount on weekends for selected sets. It’s no wonder we keep coming back.
