Ximending in Taipei Part 2

February 13, 2011 by Richard

This is part 2 of our trip to Ximending in Taipei. Read more about Part 1 here.

Freshy made masachi. They can make masachi balls for you on the spot with read bean, peanut or sesame inside. Irene ordered a couple but seemed to like the one we had at Taipei 101 better.

Ji Guang Fried Chicken. A store I’ve seen a few times in other areas but finally got the chance to try it in Ximending. They have been in business for more than 30 years according to the sign, so I was curious to order some. So off I went and ordered a pack for 55NT (P82.5) I had initially thought they were boneless chicken pieces, but open spearing a piece with the provided sticks, I found they had bones. The skin was crispy and flavored with pepper, chili powder or a combination of both. The meat of the chicken was juicy and flavorful but I dislike having the presence of bones. Upon closer tasted, I think the taste is similar to the ones from WuXiang/Sincerity here.

365 Snack House. On our first rainy night trip, we took back to the hotel an order of oyster cake from this shop. All of really enjoyed and during the rest of our trip, we could not taste one that held a candle to the first one from here. So on our next visit to Ximending, I really made an effort to eat it there since if it tasted that good in the hotel, it must taste even better there.

Radish cake and Stinky Tofu. Irene’s two orders, I ate some of the radish cake but pushed the stinky tofu far away.  The radish cake was quite good, you could really taste the radish in each piece. I wished they had pan fried it longer to have a crispier outer layer.

Stewed minced pork rice. G’s perennial order, I think she ordered this at least 4 times during our tirp.

Oyster Cake. the main reason I came back to Ximending was to have this again.  Large fresh plump oysters cooked with egg and cabbage. Their version is a little different from what we have in Manila, since it has alot more egg and the presence of cabbage. It also topped with fruit sauce,  a sweetish sauce right up my taste alley. At first I thought it was chili sauce and wanted them to omit it fro my order but they quickly corrected me and said it was not spicy and they had a very special sauce.

After that meal, we all went home happy to pack for our trip back home.
