Yabu Sends in The Dons

March 24, 2015 by Richard

There’s something exciting bubbling at Yabu, the restaurant that started the katsu craze in Manila. They are introducing two new dishes that aims to shake up our common notions about donburi (rice bowl).

I got a chance to sample them before they are introduced to the public on March 25,2015. These dishes will only be available until May 31, 2015 only and are served with the Yabu signature unlimited servings of miso soup, cabbage, rice, fruits and pickles.

Yabu Katsu Curry Don

The first one to be laid on our table is the Curry Katsu Don (P480/rosu, P480/hire, P470/chicken).  Yabu’s signature katsu laid on top of minced beef Japanese curry and melted mozzarella cheese. Same as with their Katsu Curry, you can choose you spice level (mild, hot, very hot).

Yabu Katsu Curry Don Mozzarella Cheese

Look at all that cheese, bubbling on the sizzling stone bowl container. Mix everything together and coat the katsu in the addictive sauce. If you like socarrat/tutong then you’ll have to let it sit a bit to let the rice underneath cook some more.

Yabu Katsu Cocktails

It was my first time at Yabu’s branch in Glorietta 5 so I was surprised to find out that they served cocktails too. Irene got to try the Honshea (P140) and Kyohime (P140) with the more citrusy Honshea her favorite.

Yabu Salmon Don 02

If you love salmon then you’ll go crazy over the Salmon Don (P490).

Yabu Salmon Don 01

It’s got a 1 1/2 inch thick salmon steak, cooked perfectly with a nice pink center and glazed with teriyaki sauce. They’ve added some crunch with the crispy salmon skin bits on the side as well as sauteed bell pepper and eggplant on top of teriyaki fried rice.

Yabu Salmon Don Ikura Salmon Roe

Look closely on the other side, partially hidden by the vegetables and you’ll find a bunch of ikura (salmon roe). These little balls pop open in your mouth and gives an extra dose of salmon flavor.

These two special edition Yabu donuri bowls are available from March 25, 2015 to May 31, 2015. As a little added bonus for trying them out, Yabu will be giving away a trip for 2 to Tokyo, Japan. Each order of the Yabu donburi creations will receive a raffle ticket to join the exciting contest. The trip will include airfare for 2 persons and 4D/3N accommodations.

The salmon is goooood. Too bad the rice refill isn’t the teriyaki rice.

Glad you liked the salmon. I don’t even finish one serving of rice in Yabu but I guess if they give you unlimited teriyaki rice they’d be out of business.
