Yabu House of Katsu has finally added beef to their evolving menu with the introduction of their take on the Gyudon. This joins the Salmon Don and the Curry Katsu Don as limited time offerings, the more popular ones has a chance to make it to the menu permanently. The Gyudon was made available at all branches on May 14, 2015.
Yabu gives the classic Gyudon (beef rice bowl) their own spin to it. It all starts with the US beef belly strips, I estimate it’s as thick as the ones used in karubi cut for Japanese bbq. The beef is grilled to give it a dose of smoky flavor before adding it to the bed of rice, sauteed onions and a creamy poached egg to crown it.
Each order of Gyudon comes with a small container of their special honey soy sauce. Be sure to pour it into your don and mix before enjoying. It adds a dose of sweet and savory flavor that makes it all the more enjoyable.
I really enjoyed Yabu’s version of gyudon, it’s a heftier beef bowl with the thicker slices of beef that even has a new dimension of flavor from the grilling.
Yabu is also introducing a new dessert called Kuromitsu, which will be available at all branches on May 18, 2015. Two scoops of vanilla ice cream in a pool of kuromitsu (Japanese black honey) with drizzled caramel syrup and strewn chopped almonds. A nice way to cleanse off all the rich flavors of the beef, this also was surprisingly not so sweet.
Time to visit Yabu again to try the new Gyudon, and Kuromitsu dessert.
