Checking Out Yabu’s New Tori Menchi Katsu

June 7, 2014 by Richard

I was instantly made a fan of Yabu after trying it at their first branch in Megamall way back in 2011. I can’t believe its been almost three years and many many branches after, plus lots and lots of other katsu shops mushrooming around the metro. Lauren seemingly always wants to eat at Yabu every time we visit Megamall or mention the word katsu.

This time around we were trying the new items that Yabu has added to the menu, they keep adding to item every so often.

Yabu Kimuchi TofuYabu Chilled Chicken Salad

We tried out the new Kimuchi Tofu and paired with the Chilled Chicken Salad (P205). The kimuchi is the Japanese version of kimchi, less spicy and tart than the original Korean dish. The tofu was silky soft and cold, best to eat a bit of the kimuchi together with the tofu for a balance of flavors. The chicken salad is composed of julienned cabbage with edamame beans and wanton strips tossed in mustard vinaigrette. The salad is a texture wonderland that’s still surprisingly light.

Yabu Menchi and Seafood Katsu Set 01Yabu Menchi and Seafood Katsu Set

I tried their new Menchi and Seafood Katsu Set (P530), a new offering combining the menchi katsu with other seafood katsu like squid, fish and prawn. The menchi katsu is a combination of pork and beef with a layer of cheese in the middle. It is served with the usual unlimited cabbage, pickles, rice (white or brown), miso soup and a bowl of fruits. I really enjoyed the ika/squid katsu, even though it was coated with panko and deep fried the squid was still tender and juicy. I actually could not finish off the whole set and had to have the fish wrapped up and brought it home.

Irene had the other new dish, the Tori Menchi Katsu (P385), minced chicken stuffed with ham and cheese (think cordon bleu Yabufied). It is served as a set also with the same accompaniments. Look at all the cheese that is oozing out of the tasty katsu dish. I’d still go for the menchi katsu if I have it in curry but this one is just superior as is. If you love cheese and ham then this is a no brainer order for you.

Have you tried these new dishes from Yabu? Be sure to share your experience here and let me know if you enjoyed them.
