Yu Sheng and New Chef’s Recommendations at Crystal Jade Dining In

January 26, 2015 by Richard

Singaporean import Crystal Jade Dining In gives Chinese New Year’s celebrations a toss for good luck with their Yu Sheng set offerings. The Yu Sheng tradition is very popular in Malaysia and Singapore to bring good luck as a celebration of the coming lunar year. Virtually unknown in the Philippines until a few restaurants started offering it last year.

Crystal Jade Dining In BGC Yu Sheng

The Yu Sheng Salad (P880/small, P1650/large) is available for dine or take out. Mix all the ingredients and toss as high as you can as this will signify how much luck will come your way. One of the rare times making a mess is not only permissible but encouraged.

Crystal Jade Dining In BGC Xiao Long Bao

Crystal Jade Dining In has finally relented to customers wanting to taste their Xiao Long Bao. The dish was previously only available at Crystal Jade Shanghai Delight but due to the clamor of their diners, they can now be enjoyed in both restaurants.

Crystal Jade Dining In BGC Peking Duck

Next up was the Peking Duck, a dish I felt needed a bit of improvement. The skin was not as crisp as I felt it needed and the pancakes it was wrapped in a little too chewy. I still consider Peking Garden the place to enjoy this.

Crystal Jade Dining In BGC Braised Noodle Shredded Duck Mushrooms

Braised Noodles with Shredded Duck and Mushrooms was the the second way for the Peking Duck. I was a bit underwhelmed with initial way but this really redeemed it. This was the one I enjoyed the most and had quite a bit more than I intended to. The noodles absorbed a lot of the flavor of the duck meat giving it an umami taste.

Crystal Jade Dining In BGC Double Boiled Fish Soup Papaya

Double Boiled Fish Soup with Papaya and White Fungus. Soups are a strong point of Chinese cooking with delicate flavors extracted thru careful technique. This one had light flavor with papaya adding a surprise sweetness and the white fungus adding a nice texture crunch. Be careful eating this as the fish slices still have some bones.

Crystal Jade Dining In BGC Sweet Sour Crispy Prawn with Apple

Crispy Prawns with Sliced Apples and Sweet and Sour Sauce. A dish with a tartness that I appreciated with surprised light sweetness from julienned apples.

Crystal Jade Dining In BGC Seasme Balls with Mushrooms

I thought we were already having dessert when the Golden Sesame Balls with Mushrooms were laid on the table. At initial glance, you’ll the usual buchi but crack it open and be astonished at the chopped mushroom filling. The surprises does not end there as you’ll taste the gritty and flavorful salted egg the balls were coated in. A nice savory buchi for non buchi lovers like me.

Crystal Jade Dining In BGC Sauteed Vegetables with Preserved Vegetables

I love vegetable dishes especially the sauteed ones so it was no surprise I enjoyed the Sauteed Vegetables with Preserved Vegetables. I would have been quite happy with this dish and a cup of steam rice.

Crystal Jade Dining In BGC Taro Ball Coffe Jelly Mochi

To cap off the meal we had a trio of Taro Balls (P160/3 pcs.), Chilled Coffee Jelly (P150/3 pcs.) and Mango Mochi Balls (P160/3pcs.). The coffee jelly was my favorite with its super strong coffee flavor.
